Time Management Experiment – Part 3

Time Management Experiment, Part 3. Yes, I'm running out of ideas of what to do with this motif. On the other hand, I can't really be spending hours creating imaginative graphics for posts that are about effective time-management, can I?

My newest self-experiment has run it’s course and as I already reported in the last post, it’s been an interesting experience and an experiment that I can consider a success. In this post, I report on what I learnt and go over some new ideas that I want to implement in order to further improve the “5-hour workday” time-management method.

Time-Management Experiment – Introduction

TimeExperiment1

A very well-known principle of productivity and time management is known as Parkinson’s Law, which simply states that any task will expand to fill the time allotted for it’s completion. In other words, if you have one week to write a report, it will take you about one week to finish. If you have only two days to write the same report, that same task will take you about two days to finish.

There’s a simple technique often called “time boxing”, that helps you use Parkinson’s Law to your advantage and in this post I introduce the experiment I will be doing with this method over the course of the next week.

What If Only Your Actions Counted?

Iaido Sword Draw: Iaido is a Japanese martial art that focuses on very fast, decisive action, namely the intercepting or blocking and counterattacking an assailant with one motion, all done seamlessly following the drawing of the sword.

What if only what you do counted?

What if that was the only thing that carried any weight or mattered to anyone? What if only your actions mattered?

Not your words, not your thoughts, not your beliefs, not your principles, not your plans, not your hopes, not your dreams, not what you actually really mean, not your friends, not your possessions, not your genes and predispositions, not your personality, not your past, not your reasons, not your mindset.

Only your actions, what you actually do, from this moment onward.

What would happen if you lived your life as though this were true?

The “Grow Stronger” Approach

13th Warrior - Banderas totally failed at growing stronger in this movie. He's the hero anyway, of course, so I probably shouldn't be using this as an example, but I'm going to anyway.

In the movie “13th Warrior”, Antonio Banderas plays the main character who is an Arab who finds himself out of place on a quest with a bunch of burly Vikings (makes more sense when you actually see the movie). When he is given a sword by one of the Vikings, he complains that the sword is much too heavy and asks how the hell he’s supposed to fight with a sword that he can hardly lift. To this, one of the Vikings replies:

“Grow stronger, little brother.”

That’s basically the approach I’m taking in regards to personal productivity.

Project: Productivity Ninja

This Ninja is about to assassinate time! Or perhaps he's actually protecting that clock in the background. That wouldn't be very Ninja-like, though.

In 2010, there will be one large focus in my life and also on Explorative Approach. That focus is productivity.

Recent developments in my life and my businesses have been very interesting and promising, but unfortunately, my life is pretty chaotic right now. So, in 2010 I’ll be concentrating on getting my time-management and personal productivity sorted out.

30 Videos in 30 Days – Conclusion

Film Strip

A few days ago my 30 Videos in 30 Days challenge came to an end. This post is about two things: first, I have to deliver proof that I actually made 30 videos in the past 30 days. And second, I want to tell you a few things that I learned during this challenge. Let me say straight away that I’m very happy I started this challenge, because I had what was probably the best learning experience I’ve ever gotten out of one of these challenges.

Read on to get the details.
